Turai Chana Dal is cooked with Turai (Turi / Bitter gourd) and Chana dal (Split Bengal gram). Here the combination of Indian Dal and Vegetable is cooked in tasty Indian Masala.
Turai is a Ridge gourd, a very famous Indian Vegetable with lots of Iron and Vitamins. You can make soup and starters from Turai. Some people use it for making pulao dishes as well. Turai can be cooked with moong dal and tastes simply great. Toori (Gilka) contains a huge amount of nutritional values and considered good for human brain.
I generally cook Turai Chana Dal in the pan. I use to boil dal and then mix with turai and spices, but this time, I changed my plan and made it in a pressure cooker. The taste and flavor was really good and the most important thing is that I cooked it in a very less time.
How to make Turai Chana Dal Recipe:
Turai Chana Dal Recipe is cooked with Turai and Chana dal. A healthy combination of Indian Dal and Vegetable is cooked in tasty Indian Masala.
Ingredients
- 2 cups Turai (Ridge gourd), peeled and diced
- 1 cup Split Bengal gram (chana dal)
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon ginger, chopped
- 1 teaspoon garlic, chopped
- Few curry leaves
- 4 tomatoes, chopped
- 1/10 teaspoon asafoetida (hing)
- 1/2 teaspoon red chilli powder
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon coriander powder
- 1 teaspoon garam masala powder
- 1/4 teaspoon dry mango powder (amchur)
- Fresh coriander leaves, finely chopped
- 2 tablespoon oil
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Soak chana dal in water for about 20 minutes. Peel and rinse turai in tap water. Cut into bit size pieces and keep aside. Heat oil in a pressure cooker and add mustard seeds. When the seeds starts popping up, add curry leaves. Saute on a low flame and mix in chopped onion. Cook the onion, till little browned.
- Add chopped tomatoes, turai and chana dal. Pour 2 cups of water. Mix in salt and spices. Cover the pressure cooker and cook it till 6 whistles. Open the lid and add some more water, if the dish is too dry.
- Mash it little bit and maintain the desired consistency of dal and turai. Keep on medium high flame for 2 more minutes.
- Turai Chana Dal is ready to serve.
Notes
Turai Chana becomes dry, if kept for a long time, hence you can add water and bring it on a boil, just before serving.
Chef Tips:
- Turai Can be cooked with Moong Dal and Masoor Dal as well. It always tastes delicious.
- Turai Moong Dal is best to serve with Steamed Rice or Jeera Rice.
