Dal fry is a yellow moong dal cooked with onion and tomatoes and tempered with the flavored spices. It is one of the most famous delicacy of North India. Many people make this recipe by combining various dal’s, here I’m going to make simple, tasty and quick dal only by using moong dal.

Ingredients:
- 1 cup yellow moong dal (split yellow gram)
- 1 tsp red chilli powder
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- Salt to taste
For the tempering:
- 2 tsp ghee or oil
- 2 tsp ginger-garlic paste
- 4-5 curry leaves (broken in half)
- 2 dried kashmiri red chillies (broken in half)
- 4-5 green chillies finely chopped
- 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
- 1/2 tsp whole jeera
- 1 medium size onion finely chopped
- 4 tomatoes finely chopped
For the garnishing:
- Fresh chopped coriander leaves
- 1/4 tsp chaat masala powder
How to make Dal fry:
- Wash the moong dal 3-4 times in normal water and soak in 2 times of water for 15 minutes.
- Heat the pressure cooker, add dal with its own water, salt, red chilli powder, turmeric powder and 1 cup of water.
- Cover the pressure cooker with the lid and wait for 5-6 whistles or until dal is tender.
- Uncover the pressure cooker and whisk the dal till it become smooth.
- Heat up a sauce pan and add ghee.
- Ina meantime add mustard seeds, curry leaves, whole jeera, kashmiri red chillies and green chillies. Saute for a minute.
- Add ginger and garlic paste and saute well.
- Add chopped onion and cook until onion become soft.
- Add tomatoes and salt. cook for 5-6 minutes on medium low heat.
- Pour this tempering mixture in the steamed dal, mix well.
- Add water if required and bring to a boil.
- Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
- Sprinkle some chaat masala while serving with steamed jeera rice.

- You can add garam masala to spice up the dal.
